Grandmother Power

Activist grandmothers are standing up for their grandchildren in a fight for political, economic and social justice. Their astonishing stories were the basis for this exhibition, based on the award-winning book Grandmother Power.

For the first time in history, Grandmothers are campaigning universally and vigorously for political, social, and economic justice.  And they are succeeding. There are more than 42 million grandmothers in the U.S. alone, and half of them are aged 44-65. They are younger, healthier, and better educated than they have ever been. Paola Gianturco, a grandmother herself, has profiled 120 activist grandmothers in 15 countries on 5 continents in “Grandmother Power: A Global Phenomenon.” This internationally acclaimed book, with it’s impactful stories and photos, was the inspiration for this exhibition.

This multidimensional exhibition uses a thoughtful blend of modern and authentic materials to reflect the feeling of a contemporary grassroots movement. The visitor will experience compelling stories visually with the option of a cell phone guided audio tour, narrated by Paola Gianturco.

“Grandmother Power generated a huge audience for an exhibition opening at the Dennos Museum Center, with around 400 people in attendance. It continues to engage visitors of all ages as demonstrated by the invited comments people have left about their own grandmothers. I am very pleased that we bought it to The Dennos.”
– Gene Jenneman, Executive Director, The Dennos Museum, Traverse City, MI

“I felt like I met more of my sisters in the faces of the grandmothers.”

“This exhibit shows that the saying, ‘It takes a village’ is so very true. Where would we be without these caring, loving grandmothers?”

“Thank you! It brought tears to my eyes.”

“I thought the exhibit was absolutely amazing, very interesting, very enlightening. I really appreciated it.”
