Support the 1937 LaFrance Aerial Ladder Truck

Tiller fire truck on Bridge Street Bridge old photograph

Please help us bring this important part of Grand Rapids history back to its original condition!

A generous matching gift of $20,000 was made to this fund to help restore the 1937 LaFrance Aerial Ladder Truck. These funds will underwrite required rebuilding of the truck’s engine and drive components for reliable operations, restoration of the onboard equipment, and cosmetic upgrades. With your support, this truck will be available upon successful restoration for community events, parades, and other educational programs.

Back on the road:

In service with the Grand Rapids Fire Department from 1937 until the early 1970s, this specialized machine was acquired to meet the needs of the rapidly growing City of Grand Rapids. The ability to maneuver this nearly 70-foot-long truck required a second driver who would “tiller” the truck from a rear-mounted steering wheel and assist with raising of the 85-foot aerial ladder.

The impressive apparatus was sold to a collector in 1975, but through the generosity of a donor, it is back in its home city as part of the GRPM’s Collections.

Restoration Project:

Currently, there is much needed restoration work to be done to return the vehicle to operating condition. The Grand Rapids Fire Department is partnering with the GRPM in the effort.
