The Riverfront
This outdoor space on the banks of the Grand River offers the community a new opportunity for closeness to the natural resource at the center of this city’s identity.
Explore exhibits, enjoy the views, and learn something new on the water’s edge.
What to See:
The Geology Wall
Find the layered wall on the South side of the Carousel. These six types of stone represent some of the layers you would find if you dug deep into the ground below Kent County. Discover when each layer was formed, how thick they are, and how they are distributed around Michigan.
The Geology Wall was made possible by the Jim and Barb Haveman Family.
Fish of the Grand River
There are over 100 known species of fish in the Grand River, and you might be able to spot a few along the river’s edge. Some of the fish species are carved into boulders along the pathway. These carvings are called Grand River Fish Petroglyph by Kevin Sudeith, an Art Prize piece from 2014. Can you find all five boulders?
Fish of the Grand River was made possible by Independent Bank.
What is a Watershed?
The Grand River Watershed is a massive network of tributaries that flow into Lake Michigan. Find this sign along the riverfront and reflect on where this water came from, where it is going, and how we protect it.

Outdoor Classroom
The outdoor classroom is a gathering place where visitors can experience hands-on, place-based, and STEAM experiences during guided education and public programs, creating greater connections for learning between residents and the local watershed. When not in use by groups, this location is perfect for a peaceful pause along the riverside.
The Outdoor Classroom was made possible by the DeVos family. The outdoor classroom celebrates lifelong learning. May it spark imagination and joyful moments.
