Explore River of Time's First Landmark: Maple Island
The Maple River, a former side channel of the Muskegon River, was once a logging river. Logging companies damaged this delicate ecosystem. Today, The Little Band of Ottawa Indians, the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly, local residents, and township county, state, federal, and non-profit partners are working on the Maple Restoration Project.
This StoryMap explores how Maple Island, formed by the Maple River channel, came to be, and what it might become. These stories were collected by researchers Gareth Baldrica-Franklin, Caroline Gottschalk, and Marty Holtgren.
This project is made possible by grants from the Michigan Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Fremont Area Community Foundation.
