Roger That! Celebration at the Museum

Saturday, February 11

Join us at the GRPM for the public celebration of Roger That! Visitors will learn more about Roger B. Chaffee and space exploration with hands-on activities hosted by both the Museum and community partners including building stations where attendees can design their own rockets and paper airplanes, astronaut challenges, artifact interactions including meteorite samples, tektite, and more. See additional events below!

Public Activities at the GRPM

Join the GRPM for the public celebration of Roger That! on Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11. Visitors will learn more about Roger B. Chaffee and space exploration with hands-on, STEAM-based activities on Friday and Saturday, hosted by both the Museum and community partners including build stations where attendees can design their own rockets and paper airplanes, astronaut challenges, learn about the Golden Record, underwater ROV exploration, artifact interactions including meteorite samples, tektite, and much more.

Community partners for 2023 Roger That! include Mark Gleason/Underwater ROV technology, the Grand Rapids Children’s MuseumKent District Library, the Grand Rapids Amateur Astronomical Association (GRAAA), the GVSU Padnos College of EngineeringGVSU Physics Club, the GVSU Lunar Lakers and the National Informal STEM Education Network.

Roger That! activities at the GRPM will be available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, February 10, and Saturday, February 11, and are included with general admission tickets to the Museum.

Design That! 2023

Design That! is a design challenge offered to 4th to 8th-grade students in the greater Grand Rapids area that focuses on four major areas related to space exploration:

  • Humans in Space
  • Communities in Space
  • Technology in Space
  • History of Space Exploration

How you can participate in Design That!

  1. Select a topic, form a team (recommended size 2-6 students), and do the research on your topic.
  2. Connect with us by Friday, January 27, 2023, to participate.
  3. Email your project reflection (details below) to rogerthat@gvsu.edu by Friday, February 3, 2023.
  4. Student teams can create physical models and/or a short (3-5 min) video describing their projects.

Late Opening Notice.

On Saturday, May 11, the Museum will open at 12 p.m. due to road closures for the Amway River Bank Run.

Early Closure Notice.

The Museum will close at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1 for Museum Adventure After Dark. Tickets are still available!
